Grün und still so lag die Heide,
Uferböschung, alte Weide.
Bog sich tief nun Jahr um Jahr,
Zu stillen Wassern, kalt und klar.
Wo da tief in Grundes Dunkel,
Großer Augen Wehmuts Funkeln.
Schimmert hoch nun Jahr um Jahr,
Auf graues, langes Weidenhaar.
Weide, alte Weide!
Herbst zog ein in grüne Heiden.
Klamm die Böhe, Blättertreiben.
Kurz ward bald das Licht der Tage,
'Zählt bis heut der Weide Sage.
Unbeirrt doch waren beide,
Stumm die Blicke, Trauerweide.
Nie zu fassen ihre Bürde,
Nie zu brechen einer Würde.
Weide, Trauerweide!
Hörst du das Lärmen in den Tiefen der Heide?
Das Brechen, das Reißen, Verbrennen der Zweige.
Die Äxte, sie hacken, das Holz es zersplittert.
Die Donner, sie grollen ihr tiefstes Gewitter!
Das Wasser, es schäumet, gepeitscht sind die Wogen,
Hilflos, so starrt sie und sieht auf das Morden.
Geschlagen von Trauer das Funkeln erkaltet,
Getragen von Wagen die Weide entgleitet...
Winter wars, nach vielen Jahren,
Kam ein Boot herangefahren.
Friedlich zog der hölzern Kahn,
Am Ufer seine Bahn.
Dunkel schoss aus tiefen Ranken,
Eingedenkt der grauen Planken,
Brach sie Kiel, es sank der Bug,
Das Wasser hart ans Schilfrohr schlug.
Und so schlang sie und so zwang sie und so zog sie sie herab.
Und so schlang sie und so zwang sie alle in ihr kaltes Grab.

Green and silent lays the moorland
